Release: Mural in Southwest Baltimore Honors Racheal Michelle Wilson
Racheal Michelle Wilson died in the line of duty in 2007 during a training exercise in the Boyd-Booth community. To honor Wilson’s legacy and sacrifice on behalf of residents in the City of Baltimore, the park and a mural was conceived by Jerlene Boyd, a long-time Boyd-Booth resident, the Wilson family, and the residents of Booth-Boyd. All are invited to honor Wilson’s life with a ribbon cutting at the Racheal Wilson Memorial Park at 145 S. Calverton on Monday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m.
BALTIMORE, MD NOVEMBER 21, 2019 –The Concerned Citizens of Boyd-Booth, the African American Fire Fighters Historical Society, and the City of Baltimore announce the completion of the Firefighter Racheal Wilson Memorial mural in the Southwest Baltimore community of Booth-Boyd. All are invited to honor Wilson’s life with a ribbon cutting at the Racheal Wilson Memorial Park at 145 S. Calverton on Monday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m.
Racheal Michelle Wilson died in the line of duty in 2007 during a training exercise in the Boyd-Booth community. To honor Wilson’s legacy and sacrifice on behalf of residents in the City of Baltimore, the park and a mural was conceived by Jerlene Boyd, a long-time Boyd-Booth resident, the Wilson family, and the residents of Booth-Boyd. The mural was designed by the artist Justin Nethercutt with the assistance of Firefighter Wilson’s children, Princess Davis and Cameron Wilson. The mural is supported by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and the State of Maryland's Project C.O.R.E. efforts.
A playground, designed by the community working with Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, is scheduled to be installed in June 2020. The adjacent park space will feature a community-designed mosaic.
The park is a part of Baltimore's Green Network Plan, adopted in September 2018 by Baltimore City’s Planning Commission. This plan provides a vision to create an interconnected network of parks and green spaces, with a particular focus on transforming vacant lots into active and inviting green spaces in communities hit the hardest by vacancy and disinvestment.
